Onna Whitley: Project Accountant

How did you get started in the construction industry?

Over 20 years ago, I started a Punch-Out business with my husband, ensuring everything is finished and up to code which is essential for the final stages of new home construction.

Tell me about your current role and how you got there.

About 3 years ago, I started doing accounting work for a concrete company; then I moved to Batson-Cook Construction as a Project Accountant, and now with Live Oak doing multifamily project accounting. As a project accountant, I work closely with project managers, contractors, and vendors to manage the financial aspects of projects, including budgeting, forecasting, tracking expenses, and ensuring the projects stay within financial compliance.

What is your favorite part about working at Live Oak?

The people and atmosphere.  Everyone is wonderful to work with, and I look forward to coming to work each day.  I am always learning new things, which I love.

Hannah Hess: Project Engineer

What does it mean to you to be a woman in construction?

Being a woman in construction challenges the status quo and demonstrates that success is defined by skill and resilience, not gender. My journey from Office Administrator to Project Engineer at Live Oak Contracting showcases the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. Contributing to impactful projects is fulfilling, and I aim to pave the way for other women in the industry, proving our essential role in shaping its future. Ultimately, being a woman in construction is about building a legacy for the next generation, allowing them to pursue their passions without barriers.

What advice would you give other women wanting to pursue a career in construction?

My biggest advice is simple: Go for it and own your place in this industry. There will be times you feel the need to prove yourself, but let that motivate you, not intimidate you. Confidence in your abilities is key. Keep learning, ask questions, and embrace new challenges. Surround yourself with a strong support system of mentors, colleagues, and fellow women in construction. Their guidance can be invaluable, especially during tough times.

How has your role at Live Oak evolved?

Over the past 7 years and 9 months at Live Oak Contracting, my role has evolved from Office Administrator to Project Engineer. I started by managing documentation and coordinating meetings, gaining a strong foundation in industry operations. As I transitioned to Project Administrator, I took on contracts, RFIs, and project documentation, working closely with project managers and subcontractors to ensure smooth coordination. Now, as a Project Engineer, I’m actively involved in field operations, problem-solving, and keeping projects on schedule and within budget. Each step has sharpened my technical expertise, strengthened my ability to anticipate challenges, and reinforced my passion for the construction industry.

Robyn Webb: Project Administrator

How did you get started in the construction industry?

Over 40 years ago, I took my first job in construction at the St. Johns River Power Park, a coal-fired power plant on Jacksonville’s Northside. At the time, I worked as an office assistant for the mechanical contractor on Unit 1. This was long before computers and cell phones—communication with the field was done over walkie-talkies, and blueprints were massive mylar sheets stored in cabinets. Throughout the five-year project, I held multiple roles, including office assistant for the painting contractor on Unit 2 and startup technician for the engineers. That experience gave me a strong foundation in the industry and set the stage for my career in construction administration.

Tell us about your current role and how you got there.

In 2020, after nearly 18 years with a large construction company, I was at a career crossroads when the pandemic led to job cuts. I put my resume on LinkedIn, and within a few months, I was hired at Live Oak as a Project Administrator. Looking back, I never would have left my old job on my own, but joining Live Oak was the best thing that could have happened to me.

As a Project Administrator, I play a key role in keeping our projects running smoothly. I support the Project Management Team by handling contracts, submittals, and document control, ensuring that all paperwork is in order from pre-construction to project closeout. I also coordinate with subcontractors, assist with scheduling, and help maintain compliance with project requirements. My job is all about keeping things organized and making sure our teams have what they need to get the job done. It’s fast-paced and detail-oriented, and no two days are ever the same—which is exactly what I love about it!

What is your favorite part about working at Live Oak?

The people. Our leadership team truly cares about us, maintains an open-door policy, and fosters an environment where we have the tools and support to excel. It makes a world of difference when you feel valued in your work!

Ashlie Villareal: Office Administrator

What’s your favorite part about working at Live Oak?

The office, for me, is like a home away from home. The people here feel like family. We show up for each other in ways that make this team truly unique, and it’s one of the values I cherish most about Live Oak. Working with these high-energy and highly skilled people is so cool. There are lots of moving parts, and seeing the projects we do come together is incredible.

What does it mean to you to be a woman in construction?

Being a woman in construction to me, means wearing many different hats all the time. We’re multitaskers and that is a vastly important skill to have in any field of work, but especially this one. With as close of a team as we are, we step up for anyone who needs an extra hand, from project managers, project admins, or accountants. Regardless of our department, we put our hands in wherever it’s needed, and there’s a feeling of pride that comes with knowing you can do that. It also means leading by example. It’s no secret that men outnumber women in this field, but showing up and showing the world that we are just as skilled and motivated to work in this industry as the men we work with is a big deal, especially for the younger women who may be considering this for a career path.

Justine Innis: Project Administrator

What do you enjoy most about working in construction?

Being a woman in a male-dominated field is empowering. I love seeing projects come to life—no two builds are ever the same, and each one contributes to the future. My journey into construction started when an unexpected opportunity opened a door I never thought I’d walk through. Once I got in, I quickly realized I wanted to learn more at every stage. That curiosity and excitement for the work have driven me ever since.

What makes Live Oak Contracting stand out as a workplace?

Live Oak is an all-inclusive company where we celebrate birthdays, accomplishments, and milestones together. The environment is structured, focused, and driven by a shared desire to grow. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions, offer real feedback, and actively contribute to the success of the company. It’s a culture that values both teamwork and personal development.

How would you describe the culture at Live Oak?

At Live Oak, everyone—from leadership to field personnel—is part of the same team. No one acts like they’re above anyone else; we’re all working toward a common goal. The owner takes the time to walk around and say hello, and it never feels forced. Collaboration happens naturally across departments—I work closely with accounting, project managers, project engineers, and superintendents. The connection between the office and the field is real, and that makes all the difference.

Honoring the Women Who Build the Future

Construction is demanding yet fulfilling, and there’s no single path to success. Our team at Live Oak Contracting demonstrates that persistence and dedication lead to growth and success – reminding all women, “You’re not just part of this industry—you’re helping to shape it.”
